Hug This Man

NYU President John Edward Sexton

NYU President John Edward Sexton

When we got off the plane, the first thing we saw was a young woman holding a sign which read, “John Edward Sexton.” The name sounded familiar but I couldn’t place the name. I was thinking British government official. As we walked to customs with our own airport liaison, Beth said how cool it was that we were on the same plane as the President of NYU.

Apparently he flies to Abu Dhabi every week or two to teach a class here for local Emirati students. After we picked up our luggage we caught up with him as we waited for our car to take us to the hotel.

Beth had met him once before at a graduate dinner and he was actually the first person to tell her about NYU Abu Dhabi. She introduced herself and immediately got wrapped up in a big hug. I went to shake hands, but John Sexton doesn’t shake hands. He hugs.

He was genuinely excited to see both of us and happy that we had arrived in Abu Dhabi to be a part of the new school.

I have to say, I don’t think I’ve ever received a more enthusiastic greeting upon arriving in an airport or from a college president (no offense Bobby Vaugt).

So, if you see President Sexton, give the man a hug… and be sure to just call him John.
