Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo

Because you have to buy tickets way in advance, Beth and I missed our opportunity to go up the Burj Khalifa this trip, but we did get to check out the Aquarium in the Dubai Mall. If you’ve got kids or love wildlife, it’s definitely worth a look.

If you don’t want to spend the 40 diram (just over $10 per person) to go in, you can see inside the main aquarium tank for free from a large open area in the mall. When we happened to walk by the first time, a group of free divers were playing around and hamming it up for the audience. The divers weren’t separated from the animals, so both harmless fish and several medium sized sharks swam around them freely. One of the free divers managed to hold his breath underwater for almost 3 minutes. Try doing that at home in your bathtub.

Start out in the Underwater Tunnel, which cuts through the bottom of this massive aquarium tank. You’re kept perfectly dry, but can look up and around through the millions of gallons of water and see all the fish. A large school of reef sharks congregate just inside the entrance in a dark corner. There were probably a dozen or more less than 3 inches from us through the thick glass. Out in the open areas we saw massive eagle rays, groupers, and other exotic fish.

Take your time in the tunnel. It’s by far the highlight of the aquarium experience… unless you choose to pay to actually get in the water with the fish. That’s right, for a few hundred dollars you can actually go scuba diving right then in the aquarium with the sharks. I’m already planning my return trip.

Once you leave the tunnel, you go upstairs and make your way through the Underwater Zoo. They have small tanks with various types of aquatic life from around the world, but it’s no where near as impressive as the massive tank you can see for free.
